A Traditional Absinthe Drinking Experience at L’Absinthe Café In Paris

During my time in Paris I had the chance to check out a few highly rated speakeasy cocktail lounges and bars. L’Absinthe Café came highly recommended for a traditional absinthe experience courtesy of good reviews on Trip Advisor, Facebook and Google. That might sound a little weird but my friends and I like to do our research before spending money on food and drinks when traveling abroad. Finding places like these are sometimes hard to come by.

As we walked into L’Absinthe Café, we were greeted nicely and quickly sat at a table. Once our waiter figured out we were there for absinthe, he recommended we sit at the bar for the traditional absinthe experience. Before I share too much more about my experience, let’s cover some facts.

Absinthe originated in Switzerland back in the 1800s and allegedly once contained hallucinating side effects. It was also consumed by some of history’s favorites including Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allen Poe and Vincent van Gogh. It has a unique taste, sort of like black licorice. I believe it’s an acquired taste.

2 ounces of absinthe was poured into four glasses. Each glass contained a cocktail spoon and sugar cube. The sugar cube was lit on fire and burned until the flame went out, dripping sugar into the absinthe. Once the flame went out on the sugar, each glass was placed under a spout on the absinthe fountain. The spout was turned on to drip and the water dripped over the remains of the sugar cube and into the glass. Alas, you have a glass of absinthe served traditionally.

Final Word

I had a great time at L’Absinthe Café and highly recommend it for those seeking a unique and fun time out on the town.
