Mexico is full of coastal resort-filled cities, and all are jam-packed with entertainment, endless amounts of cerveza and cocktails and, last but not least, people. Sometimes, a little peace and quiet can be nice – but finding that in a big city can be difficult. We’re happy to say it was easy to find in Mazatlán, a popular coastal destination in Sinaloa, Mexico.
Believe it or not, you can take a 15-minute boat ride to your own private oasis called Isla de Venados…
Better known to tourists as Deer Island, this beautiful oasis can be reached by sail or motorboat from the Golden Zone for a small price. It’s worth noting that we were able to negotiate a lower price; it doesn’t always work but it’s definitely worth a shot. We took a sailboat, which was a little more expensive (750 pesos) than the motorboat (500 pesos) but, in our opinion, a much cooler experience.
Hopefully you don’t mind getting wet! Definitely wear swimwear for the ride if you choose to take a sailboat…
Isla de Venados isn’t necessarily a private oasis, but it was damn close. We were there for roughly 3 hours and not more than 20 people (from what we could see) were on the island with us, spread out across the beach. It was quiet, peaceful and serene.
We’ve read that you can book a tour through the islands off the coast, which might be more your style, but we highly recommend making a day out of it on your own by catching a sailboat with the locals. Here are a few extra tips to make your adventure to Isla de Venados more enjoyable:
- Head to the quick mart nearby, grab some beverages and fill the bag with ice. You’re gonna get thirsty on Isla de Venados!
- Your sail or motorboat captain will coordinate a time for pickup. Don’t miss your way back to the Golden Zone!
- Jump out of your comfort zone and try negotiating the cost of transport to the island. You’ll probably save a few bucks.
